Literature Text

Dr. Majors reached for the button with a trembling hand. This was exactly what she had dreaded since she’d taken the job. She’d spent weeks steeling herself for this moment, hardening her heart, trying to persuade herself that she was capable of carrying out the inevitable orders. You can do it, Mindy, she thought. You’re strong. Just press the button and get it over with already.

She swallowed. Preparing herself for the deed was one thing. But actually ending someone’s life? Personally ensuring that a person would never again draw breath, never again embrace his or her loved ones, never again laugh, cry, smile… This was something different altogether.

The little red button mocked her. It sat there on the left side of the panel, looking so small and insignificant, daring her to disobey her orders and pretend that it didn't exist. You don’t have the nerve, it said. You’re weak. Spineless. Pathetic.

Majors bit her lip. She sighed and made the mistake of looking up, at the screen above the panel of flashing buttons and dials. The subject looked so innocent, so peaceful in her sleep. Her dark brown hair was draped around her head and curled down past her shoulders in long waves. Her skin hadn't seen the light of day in over three years, and the result was a coloring so bluish-white that it appeared translucent, ghostly. A faint smile played across the girl’s lips, and in that moment Majors lost her resolve.

She just couldn't do it.
Hmmm... I'm not sure what this is gonna be for. Maybe a prologue or something. I'm not even sure why I'm posting it, but I felt like submitting something OTHER than a ref sheet for once, and I realized that I never post my literature on dA. Like, ever. So here's a little snippet of what I do with my spare time... random writings from my imagination... I actually think this thing came from a random dream I had the other night...
